Abstract: Biography of US Coast Guard commander Michael A. Healy (after whom US Coast Guard's newest polar icebreaker has been named). Healy was active in US Revenue Cutter Service in northern and western Alaska in 1880s, combatting smuggling of illegal liquor, rescuing shipwrecked sailors, bringing medical aid to isolated villages, preventing wholesale slaughter of marine wildlife, and charting previously unknown waters and lands.
