Abstract: Presents history of Alaskan development schemes from 1890 to present, examining competing definitions of state of Alaska - from "last frontier" to be exploited to "last wilderness" to be protected at all costs. Focuses on five historic battles between developers and environmentalists: Alaska Native reindeer-herding industry; New Deal homesteader programme in Mastanuska Colony; construction of Alaska Highway; political dispute over Rampart Dam; and continuing struggles over Trans-Alaska Pipeline.
