Abstract: | Describes measures to preserve population of beluga whales (Delphinapterus leucas) residing in waters of Cook Inlet, Alaska, including designation of beluga whales as "depleted" under US Marine Mammal Protection Act in 1999, and further designation as "endangered" under US Endangered Species Act in October 2008. Also describes current research undertaken by National Marine Fisheries Service on Cook Inlet beluga whale abundance. |
