Record #195250:

Periglacial environment / Matti Seppälä.

Title: Periglacial environment / Matti Seppälä.
Author(s): Seppälä, Matti.
Date: 2005.
Publisher: Oxford: Oxford University Press
In: Physical Geography of Fennoscandia. (2005.),
Abstract: Discusses definition of periglacial zone and distribution of periglacial phenomena in Fennoscandia, noting existence of only sporadic and discontinuous permafrost in northern Fennoscandia and Caledonian mountain range, with Arctic limit (+10°C isotherm in warmest month) furthest north in Northern Hemisphere. Discusses altitudinal permafrost zonation, and occurrences of: palsas, active layer and seasonal frost, large non-sorted polygons, pingo-like frost mounds and thermokarst ponds, and ice-cored moraines. Discusses occurrences of other typical frost features, such as frost shattering, solifluction and patterned grounds, and associated landforms in periglacial environment, such as active non-sorted circles, stone pits, and boulders on sub-alpine heaths, nivation hollows, and erosion/debris accumulation due to slush flows.
