Periglacial environment / Matti Seppälä.
Title: | Periglacial environment / Matti Seppälä. |
Author(s): | Seppälä, Matti. |
Date: | 2005. |
Publisher: | Oxford: Oxford University Press |
In: | Physical Geography of Fennoscandia. (2005.), |
Abstract: | Discusses definition of periglacial zone and distribution of periglacial phenomena in Fennoscandia, noting existence of only sporadic and discontinuous permafrost in northern Fennoscandia and Caledonian mountain range, with Arctic limit (+10°C isotherm in warmest month) furthest north in Northern Hemisphere. Discusses altitudinal permafrost zonation, and occurrences of: palsas, active layer and seasonal frost, large non-sorted polygons, pingo-like frost mounds and thermokarst ponds, and ice-cored moraines. Discusses occurrences of other typical frost features, such as frost shattering, solifluction and patterned grounds, and associated landforms in periglacial environment, such as active non-sorted circles, stone pits, and boulders on sub-alpine heaths, nivation hollows, and erosion/debris accumulation due to slush flows. |
