Abstract: Presents baseline assessment, using Landsat imagery from 1972-1982 and aimed at facilitating comparative studies of glacier change. Reports case studies thought to be representative of glacier diversity and fluctuation, emphasising glaciers where field and remote sensing studies have been conducted (Balt Bare, Batūra, Biafo, Gorshai, Rāikot, Sachen, Tirich Mir, and Yenguitz Har) and using selected ASTER scenes to examine interesting features identified on older imagery. Applies eight criteria to older satellite imagery of 169 glaciers to identify unusual advance, retreat, or surge histories. Criteria include strongly convoluted medial or lateral moraines, prominent tributary ice overriding or displacing main glacier ice, etc. Discusses role of alpine glaciers in mountain geodynamics.
