Glaciers of Afghanistan / John F. Schroder, Jr, Michael P. Bishop.

Title: Glaciers of Afghanistan / John F. Schroder, Jr, Michael P. Bishop.
Author(s): Schroder, John F.,
Bishop, Michael P.
Date: 2010.
In: U.S. Geological Survey professional paper. (2010.), Vol. 1386-F-3 (2010)
Abstract: Notes importance of glacier meltwater for irrigation in Afghanistan, and of satellite imagery for studying region difficult to access. More than 3 000 glaciers exist, mostly in north-east Hindu Kush and Pamirs. Most are shaded by mountain peaks or monsoon clouds and many are debris-covered. Information sources for glacier mapping include maps from US and Soviet aerial photography, Landsat imagery of 1970s, later satellite imagery, and scientific and mountaineering expeditions. Presents five case studies representative in size, character, altitude, and radiance values: small glaciers in Kūh-e-Bābā, western Afghanistan; Mīr Samīr; Kūh-e-Bandakā, central Hindu Kush; Keshnīkhān Glacier, Wākhān corridor; Wākhān Pamir. Discusses widespread glacier retreat (only recent in higher, colder north-east) and meltwater lake formation.
