Abstract: Snapshot of glacier extent and distribution, based on Landsat imagery from 1972-1982, Soviet space imagery and aerial photography, and data from Glacier Inventory of the USSR and World Atlas of Snow and Ice Resources. Sections cover: Caucasus; Pamirs, Alayskiy and Hisor ranges; Tien Shan (focus on Piks Pobedy, Khan-Tengri and Khrebet Ak-Shyyrak); Altay; Urals; Taymyr (Byrranga Mountains); north-east Siberia; Kamchatka; Russian Arctic Islands (focus on Franz Josef Land, Severnaya Zemlya and Novaya Zemlya). Discusses glacier and ice cap distributions, dimensions, and morphology based on 27-type classification. Sub-chapters cover: glacier fluctuations of Central Caucasus and Gora El'brus and glaciological disaster in North Osetiya [Ossetia]; surge-type glaciers in Pamirs; glaciology of Russian High Arctic.
