Abstract: Investigates formation of broad coastal polynyas >100 km in offshore width, focusing on divergent regime for wind-driven opening in which consolidated ice drifts offshore faster than frazil ice at edge. Examines thermal growth of inner frazil ice for finite offshore width solution. Investigates influence of wind angle, estimating deviation angle and wind factor for frazil and consolidated ice based on each momentum balance (wind-driven motion depends on ice thickness via Coriolis force). When surface wind deviates leftward ~10° or greater from offshore, divergent regime at polynya edge generates great polynya evolution. Otherwise, convergent regime yields small offshore extent. Verifies theoretical results for Okhotsk north-western polynya, using AMSR-E-derived thin-ice-thickness and Japanese 25-year reanalysis wind.
