Abstract: Describes simple model based on basal shear stress, calibrated to yield glacier surface slope as function of depth and tested against known temperature cooling constraints required to emplace Little Ice Age moraines. Models ablation reduction due to rock avalanche onto Franz Josef glacier ~10-13 kyr BP. Shows that at prevailing temperature (\$>=2°C\$ cooler than present), rock avalanche debris covering part of ablation zone could cause glacier advance from near Caravan's Knob to Waiho Loop, whereas 5°C cooling required for purely climatically driven advance contradicts proxy data. Discusses climatic significance of Waiho Loop Moraine, and use of model to test effects of climate change and rock avalanches on glacier behaviour worldwide.
