Record #195027:

Geomorphology of the Lake Shewa landslide dam, Badakshan, Afghanistan, using remote sensing data / John F. Schroder, Jr, Brandon J. Weihs.

Title: Geomorphology of the Lake Shewa landslide dam, Badakshan, Afghanistan, using remote sensing data / John F. Schroder, Jr, Brandon J. Weihs.
Author(s): Schroder, John F.,
Weihs, Brandon J.
Date: 2010.
In: Geografiska Annaler. Series A. Physical Geography. (2010.), Vol. 92(4) (2010)
Abstract: Examines origins and geomorphic evolution of landslide dam at Lake Shewa and suggests further long-term observations for hazard potential and possible future development of area. Argues that dam was formed not by glacial moraine, but by multiple rock avalanche deposits damming Arakht River. Formation of rock glacier superimposed on landslide deposits indicates dam age on order of centuries to millennia. Active faulting and high seismicity, typically unstable nature of unconsolidated deposits, and large volume of water present outburst flood potential, particularly if land use is inappropriate. Discusses potential use as hydroelectric power source.
