Abstract: Combines field data and analysis of aerial photography to interpret structural glaciology of 5 km segment of 12.7-km-long glacier draining western side of Southern Alps. Segment covers lower trunk from upper icefall to terminus. Uses ground penetrating radar to image glacier's internal structure and compare it with surface features. Relates cumulative strain from surface velocity measurements to distribution of visible structures, compares structural features with those of other glaciers and models of evolution, and classifies glacial sedimentary facies. Interprets various crevasse formations in terms of glacier flow, including reactivation of crevasse traces between foot of lower icefall and terminus as thrusts accommodating longitudinal compression at glacier snout.
