Record #195025:

Ice-marginal sediment delivery to the surface of a High-Arctic glacier: Austre Brøggerbreen, Svalbard / Philip R. Porter, and 3 others.

Title: Ice-marginal sediment delivery to the surface of a High-Arctic glacier: Austre Brøggerbreen, Svalbard / Philip R. Porter, and 3 others.
Author(s): Porter, Philip R.
Date: 2010.
In: Geografiska Annaler. Series A. Physical Geography. (2010.), Vol. 92(4) (2010)
Abstract: Examines sediment cascade in Arctic glacier basin in context of paraglacial activity, considering: delivery of ice-marginal sediments onto glacier surface; capture of sediments by supraglacial streams; and routing of suspended sediment supraglacially and then glacially to portal at side margin. Reports observations of paraglacial sediment activity and portal-stream suspended sediment flux over four days at cold-based valley glacier. Argues that stochastic pulses observed in water turbidity are driven not by discharge, but by delivery of water-saturated sediments to glacier surface from ice-marginal debris flows and subsequent transfer via glacial drainage system. Discusses importance of paraglacial component in sediment cascade of deglaciating basins and interpretation of stochastic pulses in turbidity records.
