Record #195017:

Early Holocene loessic colluviation in northwest England: new evidence for the 8.2 ka event in the terrestrial record / Peter J. Vincent, and 3 others.

Title: Early Holocene loessic colluviation in northwest England: new evidence for the 8.2 ka event in the terrestrial record / Peter J. Vincent, and 3 others.
Author(s): Vincent, Peter J.
Date: 2011.
In: Boreas. (2011.), Vol. 40(1) (2011)
Abstract: Reports OSL dates from 12 new samples of loessic silt deposits on karst uplands of northwest England. Of these dates, and three previously published from similar sediment, nine coincide with hypothesised climatic deterioration at 8.5-8.0 ka and eight with 8.2 ka event. Deposits are therefore not primary air-fall loesses of deglacial/Late glacial age, but have been reworked and now consist of loess-derived colluvial deposits. Discusses implication of ages for causes of loess reworking, discounting human influence in favour of environmental changes. Infers cooling of ~2.6-4.6°C accompanied by greater winter snow accumulation, with extended snowpack survival and increased magnitude and frequency of frost-related processes and meltwater flooding.
