Abstract: Describes development of road surface temperature (RST) model that uses heat balance method to account for effects of vehicular traffic, by factoring in shielding effect of structures along roadway and long-wave radiation (LWR) from such structures. Validates model estimates of LWR using on-site measurements, reporting RMS error of 17.8 W m⁻². RMS error in RST estimated using revised model was 1.9°C for whole day, 2.4°C during daytime and 1.3°C for night time, representing improvements over basic model of 1.6°C, 1.5°C and 1.7°C, respectively. Discusses potential further improvements, such as accounting for different structure and ambient temperatures, and dependence of shading effect on sun position.
