Record #195006:

Sikuliqiruq: ice dynamics of the Meade River, Arctic Alaska, from freezeup to breakup from time-series ground imagery / Richard A. Beck, and 8 others.

Title: Sikuliqiruq: ice dynamics of the Meade River, Arctic Alaska, from freezeup to breakup from time-series ground imagery / Richard A. Beck, and 8 others.
Author(s): Beck, Richard A.
Date: 2010.
In: Polar Geography. (2010.), Vol. 33(3-4) (2010)
Abstract: Examines processes of ice formation and breakup (Sikuliqiruq in Inupiaq) using time-series ground imagery at high temporal and spatial resolutions. Describes different modes of ice breakup and their significance for human activities, and monitoring on Meade River at caribou hunting village of Atqasuk. Presents records of discharge, water depth, air and water temperatures, and photographic time-series. Reports that freezeup from complete liquid cover to complete ice cover took less than three days in late 2008. Breakup in May 2009 took less than two hours. Argues that thermal style of spring breakups in 2009 and 2010, in contrast to mechanical style observed in 1966, is consistent with warming Arctic.
