Language: Russian.
In: Led i Sneg. (2010.), Vol. 2(110) (2010)
Abstract: Notes how widespread snow, ice, sea ice, glaciers and permafrost have influenced life and history of peoples of northern Eurasia, with scientific, practical and everyday life closely connected with glaciological phenomena in biosphere. Presents modelling of distribution of folk glaciological terminology, using for analysis various dictionaries (glaciological, folk terminology, scientific, linguistic, Russian, English and coast-dweller) and dividing lexemes into eight sources. Shows that Russian has given words to and taken words from other languages, with around 20% of list coming from other Eurasian peoples. Compares spread of word groups (e.g., from White Sea to Caspian Sea and Far East) with ancient trade routes and routes taken by explorers, etc.
