Record #194980:

Epilogue: the humanism of sea ice / Michael T. Bravo.

Title: Epilogue: the humanism of sea ice / Michael T. Bravo.
Author(s): Bravo, Michael T.
Date: 2010.
Publisher: Dordrecht: Springer
In: SIKU : knowing our ice : documenting Inuit sea-ice knowledge and use. (2010.),
Abstract: Assesses contributions to understanding of sea ice in terms of social ontology, referring to web of social relations giving objects meaning and significance. Argues that sea ice in Inuit world has clearly defined set of nomenclatures and toponymies and is embedded in rich system of meanings and significance, whereas meaning of sea ice in sciences is different and varied, though not mechanical or lifeless. Contrasts predominant interpretation of sea ice in Europe and America as inert obstacle to progress (i.e., trade and transport) with humanistic approach of current volume. Discusses politics of sea ice knowledge, particularly recognition of concerns of Inuit and other indigenous groups via participation in governance structures of Arctic.
