Record #194978:

Two Greenlandic sea ice lists and some considerations regarding Inuit sea ice terms / Nicole Tersis, Pierre Taverniers.

Title: Two Greenlandic sea ice lists and some considerations regarding Inuit sea ice terms / Nicole Tersis, Pierre Taverniers.
Author(s): Tersis, Nicole.
Taverniers, Pierre.
Date: 2010.
Publisher: Dordrecht: Springer
In: SIKU : knowing our ice : documenting Inuit sea-ice knowledge and use. (2010.),
Abstract: Analyzes sets of Inuit words associated with "ice", collected in west and east Greenland (Kalaallisut and Tunumiisuit), showing how polysynthesis works in lexical morphology. Many lexical terms are easily segmented, and a single root used as base for several lexical items with variety of senses. Words often take form of explanatory and/or descriptive comment on reality referred to and frequently express some impression or certainty deriving from observation of nature. They may also convey something of functions and attribute of their referents. Where possible, analysis of components of derived terms accompanies translation.
