Franz Boas and Inuktitut terminology for ice and snow: from the emergence of the field to the "Great Eskimo vocabulary hoax" / Igor Krupnik, Ludger Müller-Wille.

Title: Franz Boas and Inuktitut terminology for ice and snow: from the emergence of the field to the "Great Eskimo vocabulary hoax" / Igor Krupnik, Ludger Müller-Wille.
Author(s): Krupnik, Igor.
Müller-Wille, Ludger.
Date: 2010.
Publisher: Dordrecht: Springer
In: SIKU : knowing our ice : documenting Inuit sea-ice knowledge and use. (2010.),
Abstract: Draws on new sources related to Boas's fieldwork on Baffin Island following First International Polar Year 1882-83, in form of diaries, personal letters, and field notes, to examine Boas's knowledge of Inuit terminology for sea ice and snow and its value to current discussion about language, indigenous knowledge, Inuit, and beyond. Include list of Inuktitut words and names related to ice and snow taken from Boas' publications and compares terms for young ice and freeze-up formation in historical and contemporary Inuit/Inuktitut/Inupiaq ice vocabularies. Also addresses "Great Eskimo vocabulary hoax" debate that misconstrues Boas' use of Inuit terms and analysis of contemporary Inuit ice and snow vocabulary.
