Indigenous knowledge and sea ice science: what can we learn from indigenous ice users? / Hajo Eicken.

Title: Indigenous knowledge and sea ice science: what can we learn from indigenous ice users? / Hajo Eicken.
Author(s): Eicken, Hajo.
Date: 2010.
Publisher: Dordrecht: Springer
In: SIKU : knowing our ice : documenting Inuit sea-ice knowledge and use. (2010.),
Abstract: Examines how local and indigenous knowledge (LIK) can inform and guide geophysical and biological sea ice research, drawing mostly on Inupiaq and Yup'ik expertise from coastal Alaska. Examines contexts in which LIK transmission is particularly relevant; e.g., site selection and sampling campaign assessment, identification of rare/conspicuous phenomena, hazard assessment and emergency response, climate record embedded in LIK, value of holistic sea ice knowledge in detecting subtle, intertwined patterns of environmental change. Examines relevance of local indigenous sea ice expertise in advancing adaptation/response to climate change and guiding research. Identifies cross-cultural, interdisciplinary education and fostering of communities of practice as promising approaches to exchange between indigenous experts and sea ice researchers.
