Ice is always changing: Yup'ik understandings of sea ice, past and present / Ann Fienup-Riordan, Alice Rearden.

Title: Ice is always changing: Yup'ik understandings of sea ice, past and present / Ann Fienup-Riordan, Alice Rearden.
Author(s): Fienup-Riordan, Ann.
Rearden, Alice.
Date: 2010.
Publisher: Dordrecht: Springer
In: SIKU : knowing our ice : documenting Inuit sea-ice knowledge and use. (2010.),
Abstract: Presents descriptive summary of Yup'ik elders' observations of sea ice formation and change along Bering Sea coast of south-west Alaska, at southern limit of shorefast ice. Hunters describe negotiation of dangerous and ever-changing ice environment, made more challenging by complex interplay between tides, currents, and wind. Discussion is based on gatherings between 2000 and 2008 sponsored by Calista Elders Council (representing 1,300 elders 65 years and older) and covers themes, e.g., fall sea ice formation, changes in shorefast ice, snow in water, piled ice, ocean swells, spring on the coast, large drifting ice floes, "ones that roll", travelling through ice, dangerous ice, and "the weather is becoming a liar".
