In: | SIKU : knowing our ice : documenting Inuit sea-ice knowledge and use. (2010.), |
Abstract: | Presents overview of IPY project that took place in Clyde River, Nunavut, from 2006-2010 and brought together Inuit hunters and geomatics engineering students to design, build and test tool to assist hunters in documenting observations of environment made during regular activities. Tool combines GPS receiver, mobile weather station, personal digital assistant and digital camera. Standard observations include animals, sea ice features, land features, cabin, cache, danger, catch, etc. Describes assembly of team, testing, installation on snowmobile, and results presented as mapped observations. Sees applications in community-based environmental research and monitoring, land use planning, resource management, hazards mapping, wildlife and harvest studies, and search and rescue operations. |
