Places project in context of International Polar Year 2007-08, reviews structure consisting of various regional and individual initiatives, and covers major activities undertaken during 2006-09. Summarises key scientific outcomes and public messages and contribution to overall IPY science program. Presents synopsis of present volume and acknowledgements.
