Factors influencing the deterioration of historic structures at Deception Island, Antarctica / Benjamin W. Held, Brett E. Arenz, Robert A. Blanchette.

Title: Factors influencing the deterioration of historic structures at Deception Island, Antarctica / Benjamin W. Held, Brett E. Arenz, Robert A. Blanchette.
Author(s): Held, Benjamin W.
Arenz, Brett E.
Blanchette, Robert A.
Date: 2011.
Publisher: Oslo: International Polar Heritage Committee
In: Polar settlements : location, techniques and conservation. (2011.),
Abstract: Provides new information on factors influencing deterioration of wooden structures and artefacts at historic sites related to sealing, whaling and scientific research on Deception Island in South Shetland Islands. Effects of diverse and aggressive assemblage of wood decay fungi coupled with volcanic activity has had profound influence, and comparison with results from other polar locations indicates that larger number of more diverse microorganisms are causing different forms of degradation and more rapid rate of wood decay.
