Abstract: | Examines evolution of industrial technology and settlements by modern whaling industry in European High Arctic, and considers to what extent climatic factors and sociocultural factors determined development. Applies actor network theory (ANT) in comparative study of Finneset whaling station (Spitsbergen) and Kvalrossbukta whaling station (Bear Island). Both stations were established in 1905 by two companies previously operating in Finnmark, northern Norway, partly as result of national ban on whaling introduced in Norway in 1904. |
