The Dixon-Meares controversy / Frederic W. Howay, ed.

Title: The Dixon-Meares controversy / Frederic W. Howay, ed.
Author(s): Howay, Frederic W.,
Date: 1969.
Publisher: Amsterdam: N. Israel ;
Abstract: Account of acrimonious dispute (1786-87) between expedition captains George Dixon and John Meares concerning interpretation of Spanish sovereignty and British monopolies on northwest coast of Canada, following seizure of Meares' ships by Spain. International dispute between Spain and Britain subsequently settled amicably by Nootka Convention (1790) but Dixon-Meares controversy continued through publication of three pamphlets, in turn accusatory and self-justifying. Present volume endeavours to determine historical veracity of dispute.
