Record #194004:

Humpback whale predation and the case for top-down control of local herring populations in the Gulf of Alaska / Ron Heintz, and 5 others.

Title: Humpback whale predation and the case for top-down control of local herring populations in the Gulf of Alaska / Ron Heintz, and 5 others.
Author(s): Heintz, Ron.
Date: 2010.
In: Alaska Fisheries Science Center. Quarterly Report. (2010.), Oct-Dec (2010)
Abstract: Reports results of investigation into seasonal changes in energy content of Pacific herring (Clupea pallasii) in local population in Lynn Canal (fjord adjacent to Auke Bay Laboratories facility). Estimates biomass of herring consumed by humpback whales (Megaptera novaeangliae) in various locations in Gulf of Alaska and observes herring behaviour in response to whale predation. Demonstrates that whales can increase herring mortality by making more fish available to other predators, and considers overall effect of predation on marine ecosystem.
