Abstract: Presents outcome of OMEGA project (Development of an Operational Monitoring System for European Glacial Areas), aimed at developing methodologies using every remote sensing source for constructing elevation models and areal delineations of glaciers, and at developing operational monitoring system for glacial areas, using Hintereisferner, Austria and Engebreen, Svalbard as principal case studies. Fifteen chapters cover: principles of remote sensing; glacier formation and dynamics; glacier parameters monitored using remote sensing; early history of remote sensing of glaciers; physics of glacier remote sensing; terrestrial photogrammetry; aerial photogrammetry; optical remote sensing of glacier extent; SAR imaging; airborne laser scanning; ground-penetrating radar; detection and visualisation of glacier area changes; distortions in digital elevation models; detecting topographical change of glacier surface; and worldwide glacier monitoring.
