Abstract: Presents 24 essays by international group of scholars from various disciplines representing indigenous groups, museums, archaeologists, art historians, art dealers and private collectors. Examines ancient ivories from Russian coast of Bering Strait (Ekven, Chukotka), islands in Bering Strait (St Lawrence, Wrangel, Little Diomede) and coast of Alaska, with reference to their sophisticated formal aesthetic, cultural complexity, and individual histories. Discusses several objects from recent Russian excavations, and others from private collections.
