Abstract: | Considers timing, environmental factors, process and social impact and large-scale reindeer herding typical among Nentsy and Chukchi, based on review of work of I. Krupnik, G. Osherenko and A. Golovnev, and author's own field data. Focuses on role of reindeer as labour resource rather than food source in 18th century and suggest this was factor in enlargement of herds. Considers social impact on Komi and Nenets herding communities especially with regard to social class differentiation. |
