Arctic pastoralism in a subsistence continuum: a strategy for differentiating familiarity with animals / Hiroki Takakura.

Title: Arctic pastoralism in a subsistence continuum: a strategy for differentiating familiarity with animals / Hiroki Takakura.
Author(s): Takakura, Hiroki.
Date: 2010.
Publisher: Sendai: Center for Northeast Asian Studies, Tohoku University
In: Good to eat, good to live with : nomads and animals in northern Eurasia and Africa. (2010.),
Abstract: Challenges theoretical assumption that Arctic pastoralism is exceptional by examining management of reindeer herds in Arctic forest ecology. Considers relationship with reindeer to be one of familiarity with animal rather than "semi-domesticated". Discusses symbiotic domestication and the hunter-herd continuum. Focuses on examples of reindeer herding of Eveny in eastern Siberia and of Nentsy in western Siberia.
