Abstract: | Presents historical context needed to understand educational challenges faced in Nunavut. Focuses on cultural negotiation, policy-making, and role of tradition. Assesses developments in history of education in four periods: tradtional, colonial (1945-70), territorial (1971-81) and local (1982-99). Concludes that education is most successful when Inuit involvement and local control support system that reflects Inuit culture and Inuit visions for future. |
