Abstract: Studies diffuse rock debris accumulations in far distal parts of colluvial cones in northern Iceland, aiming to determine distribution and relative frequency of recent avalanche activity. Study confirms snow avalanche origin of these boulder accumulations and ability of avalanches to transfer rock debris great distances. Obtains relative age of deposits from lichenometry and rock hardness tests, concluding that extreme snow avalanches have been frequent since Little Ice Age, but of decreased magnitude in past decade.
