| Abstract: | Reports analysis of sediment core from Loon Lake and work on samples from raised marine deposits in vicinity. Local marine limit is around 53 m a.s.l. Lake is currently 18 m a.s.l., becoming isolated from sea around 6200 cal a. BP. Presents core stratigraphy, biogeochemical and macrofossil contents, radiocarbon ages of material from core and from driftwood around lake, etc. Driftwood samples are earliest (c. 9640 cal a. BP) from north-eastern Greenland and imply coastal area was at least partly ice-free in summer. Interprets data to inform regional histories of deglaciation, sea level and climate. |
