Record #193120:

Ewiges Eis / Wolfgang Schöner.

Title: Ewiges Eis / Wolfgang Schöner.
Translated title: Eternal ice.
Author(s): Schöner, Wolfgang.
Date: 2008.
Language: German.
In: Bergauf : Das Magazin des Oesterreichischen Alpenvereins seit 1875. (2008.), Vol. 63(133) (2008)
Abstract: Examines media claims that glaciers of Alps below 3,000 m a.s.l. will be lost by 2050, and all glaciers lost by 2100, or even 2020, as climate warms. Discusses tone and veracity of reports, interaction between journalists and experts, and lack of understanding of uncertainties involved, and also relationship between glaciers and climate, climate warming scenarios, and effects on water supply from glacier melt. Argues that even if very hot summer 2003 is typical by year 2100, Goldbergkees (typical of small glaciers less than 3,000 m a.s.l.) will still be 75% of its current size by 2050, probably disappearing by 2100. Pasterze glacier would survive well beyond this.
