| Abstract: | Describes retrieval of wood specimens from glacier forefields, moraines and glacier streams of Alps, and their use through tree-ring dating as indicators of past climate. High altitude presences of trees and moorland indicate several periods warmer than present over last 10,000 years. Examples include material from vicinities of Tschierva and Pasterze glaciers, and from Reschenpass area, where peat moorland existed at 2,450 m in Krummgampental 7,600 years ago. Argues that some 65% of last 10,000 years saw summer temperatures similar to or warmer than today's, which lie within normal fluctuations. Suggests that seeing current warm temperatures as indicating latest "climate optimum" may help clarify climate debate. |
