Record #193096:

Realm of the ice-cloaked mountain gods / Constanza Ceruti.

Title: Realm of the ice-cloaked mountain gods / Constanza Ceruti.
Author(s): Ceruti, Constanza.
Date: 2007.
In: Explorers Journal. (2007.), Vol. 85(3) (2007)
Abstract: Describes impact of retreating glaciers on archaeological sites and religious life in Andes. Reviews author's discovery in 1999/2000 of mummified sacrificial human remains on 6,700-m summit of Llullaillaco. Describes Taytacha Qoyllur Rit'i (Festival of the Father of the Star of the Snow) in Vilcanot Range of southern Peru, where 70,000 pilgrims gather at glacier basin of Sinacara. Festival climax involves young men (Ukukus) climbing glaciers of Qolque Punku to mediate between pilgrims and mountain spirits. Ukukus traditionally retrieve ice revered for its healing properties, but glacier retreat means that many return empty handed. Police now forbid extraction of ice, allowing only collection of meltwater. During daylight, pilgrims, including young children, climb lower reaches of glaciers to light small candles on ice (large candles are forbidden in attempt to halt glacier retreat)
