Interactions of Patagonian toothfish fisheries with killer and sperm whales in the Crozet Islands Exclusive Economic Zone: an assessment of depredation levels and insights on possible mitigation strategies / P. Tixier, and 5 others.

Title: Interactions of Patagonian toothfish fisheries with killer and sperm whales in the Crozet Islands Exclusive Economic Zone: an assessment of depredation levels and insights on possible mitigation strategies / P. Tixier, and 5 others.
Author(s): Tixier, P.
Date: 2010.
In: CCAMLR Science. (2010.), Vol. 17 (2010)
Abstract: Between 2003-08, Patagonian toothfish longline fishery within Crozet Islands EEZ lost total of 571 tonnes of toothfish to depredation by sperm whales (32.6% of hauled lines), killer whales (18.6%) and two species co-occurring (23.4%). Killer whales accounted for 75% of loss, and sperm whales had lower impact at 25%. Photo-identification showed 35 killer whales belonging to four different pods were involved in 81.3% of interactions. Significant variation of interaction rates with killer whales between vessels suggests influence of operational factors on depredation. Results indicate that when facing depredation vessels should travel at least 40 nautical miles to prevent killer whales from finding them again within a few hours.
