Abstract: | Discusses way in which school has incrementally intruded on customary socialisation practices of Inuit families, drawing on data collected in Arctic Bay (Nunavut) between 1990-1994. Argues that damage is inevitable, because school (institution of mainstream Canadian society) promotes expression of personhood that is inconsistent with its counterpart in Inuit society (which has traditionally socialised children to overcome egocentric concerns in interest of group survival). |
