Record #192271:

Yup'ik Eskimo contributions to Arctic research at the Smithsonian / Ann Fienup-Riordan.

Title: Yup'ik Eskimo contributions to Arctic research at the Smithsonian / Ann Fienup-Riordan.
Author(s): Fienup-Riordan, Ann.
Date: 2009.
Publisher: Washington DC: Smithsonian Institution Scholarly Press
In: Smithsonian at the Poles : Contributions to International Polar Year Science. (2009.),
Abstract: Reviews four research trips to Smithsonian collections made by Yup'ik community members between 1997-2003. In each case, Yup'ik elders had opportunity to examine ethnographic material gathered from south-west Alaska in late 19th and early 20th centuries. Most had seen similar objects in use locally when they were young and provided rich commentary not only on significance of particular tools and items of clothing, but also on traditional way of life and world-view that flourished in south-west Alaska in 1920s and 1930s.
