Abstract: Examines three seminal works of fiction set in Antarctica: The narrative of Arthur Gordon Pym of Nantucket by Edgar Allan Poe; Le sphinx des glaces by Jules Verne; and At the mountains of madness by H.P. Lovecraft, and compares their imagery and concept of man's nobility with non-fiction accounts of early 20th century expeditions of Heroic Age. Examines contribution of Frank Debenham to creation of popular image and history of Antarctica in Antarctica; the story of a continent, and status of Amundsen, Scott and Shackleton and works written by and about them. Discussion includes Romantic aesthetic of the sublime; late 20th century fiction; Kim Stanley Robinson's Antarctica and historiographical science fiction; post-colonial subalternism; feminist critique of male canon of Antarctic legends; and novels in Spanish outside usual scope of popular image of Antarctica.
