Record #192131:

Sewage disposal and wildlife health in Antarctica / J.J. Smith, M.J. Riddle.

Title: Sewage disposal and wildlife health in Antarctica / J.J. Smith, M.J. Riddle.
Author(s): Smith, J. J.
Riddle, M. J.
Date: 2009.
Publisher: Berlin: Springer
In: Health of Antarctic wildlife : a challenge for science and policy. (2009.),
Abstract: Describes past and current sewage treatment technologies used in Antarctica, summarises regulations governing sewage disposal and discusses aspects of Antarctic environment that may constrain implementation of new sewage treatment technologies. Evaluates potential environmental impacts of sewage effluent, discusses documented extent of sewage and faecal contamination in Antarctica and reviews studies of survivability of faecal micro-organisms. Reviews range of pathogens commonly associated with sewage and discusses Antarctic-specific factors that might influence which pathogens are present in sewage from Antarctic operations. Also reviews reports of sewage-associated pathogens in Antarctic wildlife and uptake of faecal bacteria in order to assess link between exposure to sewage effluent and microbial colonisation, infection or virulence acquisition. Considers whether there is any evidence for link between exposure of wildlife to sewage and ill health.
