Abstract: Reports results of fertilising patch of water in western sub-Arctic gyre with 322 and 159 kg of iron in order to induce phytoplankton bloom. After iron fertilisation, notes significant increase in dissolved iron (1.38 nM at 5 m depth) at centre of patch (day 1). Dissolved iron concentrations subsequently decreased to ambient level (~0.08 nM) on days 16-17, despite second iron fertilisation made on day 6. Also conducts shipboard culture experiments using iron and desferrioxamine B inoculation to regulate iron availability. Iron treatment in shipboard culture experiment induced growth of large-sized phytoplankton, with accompanying silicate decrease.
