Record #192028:
Fasting physiology of polar bears in relation to environmental change and breeding behavior in the Baeufort Sea / Seth G. Cherry, and 3 others.
Title: | Fasting physiology of polar bears in relation to environmental change and breeding behavior in the Baeufort Sea / Seth G. Cherry, and 3 others. |
Author(s): | Cherry, Seth G. |
Date: | 2009. |
In: | Polar Biology. (2009.), Vol. 32(3) (2009) |
Abstract: | Examines use of ratio of serum urea to serum creatinine as physiological biomarker of fasting, to monitor temporal patterns in feeding ecology of polar bears (Ursus maritimus). Study involved collection of blood from 436 bears in eastern Beaufort Sea during April and May of 1985-1986 and 2005-2006. Increased number of bears in physiological fasting state from all sex, age and reproductive classes in 2005 and 2006 corresponded with broad scale changes in Arctic sea ice composition, which may have affected prey availability. |
