Record #191955:

Dynamics of an introduced population of mouflon Ovis aries on the sub-Antarctic archipelago of Kerguelen / Renaud Kaeuffer, and 3 others.

Title: Dynamics of an introduced population of mouflon Ovis aries on the sub-Antarctic archipelago of Kerguelen / Renaud Kaeuffer, and 3 others.
Author(s): Kaeuffer, Renaud.
Date: 2010.
In: Ecography. (2010.), Vol. 33 (2010)
Abstract: Uses 37-year time series of abundance in mouflon Ovis aries population on Île Haute in Kerguelen archipelago to investigate irruptive dynamics and quantify relative effects of density and climate on mouflon population dynamics. After release in new environment, mouflon showed rapid growth and marked over-compensation, followed by second phase characterised by unstable dynamics where growth rate was negatively affected by population abundance and winter precipitation, though climate did not trigger population crashes and results suggested that lagged density-dependence and over-grazing were probable causes of mouflon irruptive dynamics. Results for Île Haute are compared with those of Soay sheep on St. Kilda, and possibility of reversible alteration of island carrying capacity after initial over-grazing period is discussed.
