| Abstract: | Introduces sea ice, history of research, and ocean setting, before dealing with phenomena at increasing scales (component properties, phase relations, internal structure, salinity, growth, decay). Discusses physical basis for interpreting variations in sea ice properties, and large scale phenomena of polynyas and leads, deformation of natural ice covers, sea floor gouging, conditions in marginal ice zone, distribution and nature of snow on sea ice, large scale drift and dynamics of pack ice, and modelling of these. Also discusses different types of underwater ice. Concludes by examining recent changes in ice extent and thickness. Appendices include glossary, guidance on sea ice sampling, and thin sections and remote sensing techniques. |
