| Abstract: | Describes chick-rearing adult Arctic terns (Sterna paradisaea) attacking collared lemmings (Dicrostonyx groenlandicus) by repeatedly lifting and dropping them until they died. Terns attack certain birds and mammals that intrude on their breeding territory but do not attack other species known to depredate eggs, which suggests that their ability to discriminate between threats is imperfect. |
