The diet of New Zealand falcons (Falco novaeseelandiae) on the Auckland Islands, New Zealand / Noel H.S. Hyde, Trevor H. Worthy.
Title: | The diet of New Zealand falcons (Falco novaeseelandiae) on the Auckland Islands, New Zealand / Noel H.S. Hyde, Trevor H. Worthy. |
Author(s): | Hyde, Noel H. S. Worthy, Trevor H. |
Date: | 2010. |
In: | Notornis. (2010.), Vol. 57(1) (2010) |
Abstract: | Analyses prey remains and regurgitated pellets of New Zealand falcons from Adams Island in sub-Antarctic Auckland Islands, collected between 1991-97. Single most frequent prey species was bellbird Anthornis melanura, though Antarctic prion and sub-Antarctic diving petrel were also common. Endemic land birds such as Auckland Island rail, snipe and teal constituted third of prey. Like any island birds, these ground-dwelling species cannot co-exist with introduced mammalian predators, but survive despite predation by native falcons. |
