Responses of pico- and nanophytoplankton to artificial iron infusions observed during the second iron enrichment experiment in the western subarctic Pacific (SEEDS II) / Mitsuhide Sato, Shigenobu Takeda, Ken Furuya.

Title: Responses of pico- and nanophytoplankton to artificial iron infusions observed during the second iron enrichment experiment in the western subarctic Pacific (SEEDS II) / Mitsuhide Sato, Shigenobu Takeda, Ken Furuya.

In: SEEDS II : the Second Subarctic Pacific Iron Experiment for Ecosystem Dynamics Study. (2009.), (2009)
Abstract: Investigates responses of pico- and nanophytoplankton to iron infusions using flow cytometry. Finds that two iron infusions (on days 0 and 7 of iron enrichment experiment) caused remarkable increase in cellular chlorophyll fluorescence and cell size of all four phytoplankton groups investigated: Synechococcus, cryptophytes, picoeucaryotes and nanoeucaryotes (other than cryptophytes). After second infusion, abundance of three phytoplankton groups, excluding Synechococcus, also started to increase. After dissolved iron concentration at surface decreased to <0.2nM on day 11, chlorophyll fluorescence of all four groups returned to level observed before iron infusion, suggesting that pico- and nanophytoplankton were physiologically stressed by iron deficiency..
