Synoptic analysis of a rare event of Saharan dust reaching the Arctic region / Joseph Barkan, Pinhas Alpert.

Title: Synoptic analysis of a rare event of Saharan dust reaching the Arctic region / Joseph Barkan, Pinhas Alpert.
Author(s): Barkan, Joseph.
Alpert, Pinhas.
Date: 2010.
In: Weather. (2010.), Vol. 65(8) (2010)
Abstract: Describes unusual synoptic situation which caused rare event of Saharan dust transportation to Far North (northern tip of Scandinavian peninsula). Examines situation during 1-4 August 2007, when trough formed along Atlantic coast of Africa causing strong south-westerly flow there. At same time mean centre of Icelandic low deepened and moved to east, near Scandinavian peninsula. Combination of south-westerly flow in south and westerlies towards Scandinavia enabled northward transportation of dust from source area in western Africa.
